Why we explain systems

Infrastructure is often covered either as uncritical promotional spectacle or only when a tunnel closes or a power line fails. Zappinorvello exists to explain the middle ground: how physical geography sets the engineering brief, and what trade-offs keep those systems running.

Editorial Framework

Constraint first, operating system second, trade-offs third

Published from Oslo by Zappinorvello Teknisk Formidling AS, zappinorvello.baby is an independent, English-language public explainer dedicated to Norwegian civil, electrical, and urban engineering. We are not affiliated with any state ministry, contractor, utility, or equipment vendor.

Whenever we document a landmark—whether the 1,240 MW Kvilldal underground powerhouse, the 26.7 km Rogfast sub-sea tunnel, or Bergen’s Fyllingsdalen cycle bore—we apply a strict three-part analytical discipline:

  • 01
Define the Natural Constraint Name the exact depth of the fjord, the compressive strength of the gneiss, the seasonal hydrology of the plateau, or the earthing topology of the residential power grid that forced engineers to design a non-standard solution.
  • 02
Trace the Operating System Show how components interact in everyday use: how surge chambers damp hydraulic shock, how onshore batteries protect rural feeders during 9-minute ferry turnarounds, and how electrostatic filters clean air mid-tunnel.
  • 03
Account for Ecological and Economic Trade-offs Document the downstream impact on wild Atlantic salmon, the fragmentation of mountain reindeer habitat, the maintenance backlog on secondary county roads, and the cost of saline corrosion in sub-sea bores.
